Albania: Berat – The City of a Thousand Windows

Berat is one of the most famous and culturally rich cities in Albania which is Known as the “City of a Thousand Windows,” Berat is a UNESCO World Heritage Site that showcases the unique blend of Ottoman, Byzantine, and Albanian architecture. It is located in the central part of Albania along with the banks of the Osum River which is surrounded by beautiful hills and mountains.

This town’s most iconic feature is its hillside full of traditional Balkan style homes that stretch upward beneath the centuries-old Berat Castle. Which dates back to the 13th century. These homes are mostly built in the 18th and 19th centuries having feature of sturdy stone foundations, white-painted upper floors and red ceramic-tiled roofs. With large wooden windows positioned to face outward the homes give the impression of being stacked on top of one another. The striking visual created by the steep slope and tightly packed layout. 

This architecture reflects not only beauty but also the deep-rooted social and cultural values of the town. As visitors explore Berat’s narrow cobblestone alleys as they are immersed in a setting where history and daily life still coexist. Many of these homes have been preserved or converted into charming guesthouses which making Berat a living museum of Albania’s rich heritage and enduring traditions.

1.   Ottoman Architecture:
The white Ottoman-era houses with large windows that climb up the hill give the city its famous nickname. These traditional houses are a symbol of Albania’s rich history and artistic heritage.

2.   Berat Castle (Kalaja e Beratit):
One of the biggest attractions is Berat Castle this is a fortress that dates back to the 4th century BC. Inside the castle walls numbers of people still live in traditional houses and visitors can explore ancient churches, mosques and ruins.

3.   Religious Harmony:
Berat is a symbol of religious coexistence. It is home to many churches and mosques that stand out side by side and reflecting the city's multicultural past.

4.   Onufri National Iconographic Museum:
Housed inside the Church of the Dormition of Saint Mary this museum showcases the art and works of Onufri a famous 16th-century Albanian icon painter and apart from this other beautiful religious artifacts showing.

5.   Natural Beauty:
The Osum River which flows through the city and adds to Berat’s scenic beauty. The surrounding hills and landscapes make it a peaceful and picturesque place for tourists.
