Albania: Berat – The City of a Thousand Windows

Berat is one of the most famous and culturally rich cities in Albania which is Known as the “City of a Thousand Windows,” Berat is a UNESCO World Heritage Site that showcases the unique blend of Ottoman, Byzantine, and Albanian architecture. It is located in the central part of Albania along with the banks of the Osum River which is surrounded by beautiful hills and mountains. This town’s most iconic feature is its hillside full of traditional Balkan style homes that stretch upward beneath the centuries-old Berat Castle. Which dates back to the 13th century. These homes are mostly built in the 18th and 19th centuries having feature of sturdy stone foundations, white-painted upper floors and red ceramic-tiled roofs. With large wooden windows positioned to face outward the homes give the impression of being stacked on top of one another.
