The history of the Academy Awards, popularly known as the Oscars, began in 1929, and the first film to receive the prestigious Best Picture award was Wings (1927). This silent epic war film marked a grand beginning for what would become the most recognized film award ceremony in the world.
Directed by William A. Wellman, Wings was an ambitious and visually stunning film of its time. It was produced by Lucien Hubbard and distributed by Paramount Pictures. The film is set during World War I and follows the story of two young men, Jack and David, who enlist in the Air Service to become fighter pilots. They both fall in love with the same woman, Mary, played by Clara Bow, one of the biggest stars of the silent film era.
What made Wings groundbreaking was its realistic aerial combat scenes, many of which were filmed with actual planes in the sky something never seen before on screen. These sequences brought an unmatched sense of realism and thrill to the audience and set new standards in cinematography and editing. The film also showed the emotional toll of war and the bond of friendship formed during such difficult times.
The 1st Academy Awards ceremony was held on May 16, 1929, at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel in Los Angeles. Only about 270 people attended, and the winners had already been announced three months in advance. Wings received the award for Outstanding Picture, which was the original name of the Best Picture category.
Interestingly, Wings was one of only two
films to receive the Outstanding Picture award at the first Oscars. The other
film, Sunrise: A Song of Two
Humans, received the award for Unique and Artistic Picture a category
that was discontinued after the first year. Among the two, however, Wings is considered the
true winner of what we now know as Best Picture.
In 2012, Wings was digitally restored and re-released, reminding modern audiences of the film’s historical and cinematic significance. Today, it stands not only as the first Oscar winner but also as a milestone in film history, representing the creative ambition and technical advancement of early Hollywood cinema.
